What is a domain registration?

A domain registration refers to the process by which an entity acquires the legal rights to use a domain name on the Internet. A domain name is a unique, human-readable address used to identify and access a specific website. Domain registration involves recording this domain name in a centralized database called the domain registry, which is managed by a designated organization or a domain registrar company.

Domain registration requires providing information and paying a fee to the chosen domain registrar, who in turn submits the request to the appropriate domain registry. This request includes the desired domain name, the registrant’s contact information, and the name servers associated with the domain. If the request meets the requirements and the name is available, the domain registry approves the request and the domain name is assigned to the registered holder for a specified period of time, usually between 1 and 10 years.

Once registered, the domain holder has the exclusive right to use that domain name for their website or for other Internet-related services, such as custom email addresses. It’s important to renew the domain registration before its validity period expires to maintain continuous usage rights.
